TRANSFERRING A QX ASCII FILE TO MS-DOS Often times when working with other computer systems it becomes necessary to convert a Valdocs document so it can be used on an MS-DOS computer. Valdocs documents are not usable by any other word processors which makes it necessary to convert them to ASCII files first. Then the ASCII files are transferred to the MS-DOS system. ASSUMPTIONS: We assume that you have a copy of RWCPM (from the QX-16's MS-DOS diskette) and an MS-DOS computer with 2 drives to use it on and are familiar enough with MS-DOS to know how to use its commands. It is also assumed that you have used the section, "Using ASC.SYS on a Valdocs Document" to make all the Valdocs documents ASCII files first. On the MS-DOS computer 1. Turn the MS-DOS computer on. 2. If it displays that it cannot load MS-DOS, put its MS-DOS diskette in the A: drive and press any key to continue. Load RWCPM 3. Once the MS-DOS prompt appears, replace any diskettes in the A: drive with the RWCPM diskette. 4. Log to the specific drive and subdirectory where you want the Valdocs ASCII files to be. If it is a floppy drive, be sure that a diskette is in that drive. 5. Type: a:rwcpm and press ENTER. 6. After RWCPM comes up with its opening menu, replace the RWCPM diskette with the diskette containing the Valdocs ASCII files. 7. Select the option CP/M to MS-DOS from RWCPM's opening menu. NOTE: Diskettes that are formatted to 376K by Valdocs are also acceptable as CP/M diskettes, however, 700+K diskettes from a QX-16 are not recognized by RWCPM. 8. Read the instruction menu that displays next and when ready, press any key, except ESC, to continue. Copy the .ASC files to the MS-DOS disk 9. Use the cursor keys to move the file pointer to each file that ends in ".ASC" and type: t to tag it. A diamond will appear to the right of each file as it is tagged. By pressing "t" when the file pointer is on a tagged file you will untag it. 10. After all files are tagged, type: m and the tagged files will be mass copied to the drive and subdirectory that you selected in step 4. 11. After all the Valdocs ASCII files have been copied to the MS-DOS computer, type: q and you will be returned to the MS-DOS prompt. NOTE: Sometimes RWCPM will make the MS-DOS cursor disappear. By using the MODE command to select the screen attributes, the cursor will come back. At this point, your ASCII files of the Valdocs documents are now on the MS-DOS computer and are ready for use by any MS-DOS word processing program that can read an ASCII document file.
